Scratchboard Art

I love working in scratchboard. There is something magical about scraping away the surface to reveal an image.

Since not everyone is familiar with scratchboard, here is some background. It was developed as an affordable alternative to wood engraving for illustration. Scratchboard consists of a color layer, that is usually white, that is covered with a thin layer of ink. This can be on paper or on a rigid support (ex: Ampersand Scratchbord). When the ink is scratched away from the surface the color underneath shows through. Sharp tools are used to remove the ink from the surface. Once completed, the piece may be colored using inks.

Here are some samples of my work. Most are done on Ampersand Scratchbord. If you are interested in purchasing an original piece, please contact me. Many of these images are also available as cards.
